The Ridgway Area School District offers an ESL (English as a Second Language) program to any student with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). Educating these students is the responsibility of the Ridgway Area School District.

The program is designed to teach social and academic language skills (Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking) to our ESL population. It is also designed to meet the cultural aspects necessary to succeed and participate in meaningful educational programs. This program was mandated by the federal and state government for full implementation at the start of the 2004-2005 school year. Eligibility of a student to be tested:

  • Students born outside the United States
  • Students whose family members speak another language in the home other than English

How a school determines ESL eligibility:

  • Home Language Survey
  • Child find studies

Assessment and Placement of students:

  • Assess identified LEP students for instructional needs
  • Place the student in an appropriate ESL instructional level
  • Assess students for advancement in proficiency levels or program exit
